Sodium-Ion Batteries Could Make Energy Storage Cheaper
Sodium-ion batteries are gaining attention because they may lower storage costs for grids, homes and some electric vehicles.
Lithium-ion batteries still dominate electric cars and electronics, but sodium-ion technology is becoming one of the most interesting clean-energy alternatives.
Sodium is widely available, and that could help reduce supply pressure over time. The biggest opportunity may be stationary storage where cost and durability matter more than maximum energy density.
For electric vehicles, sodium-ion may first appear in smaller city cars, two-wheelers or lower-cost models where range demands are modest. It is not a magic replacement for every chemistry.
The bigger story is diversity. A healthier battery market will use different chemistries for different jobs.
